Limited Access to Real Experiences · Educational Scalability · Understanding Disaster Risks
Disaster safety education has the inherent limitation that real situations are difficult to experience firsthand. Typhoons are especially hard to predict and can cause severe damage when they occur, making preparation through education and simulated experience essential. However, traditional methods struggle to provide fair, intuitive experiences across different ages and group sizes. Therefore, we need a method that allows anyone to easily experience and intuitively understand disaster risks and their progression.

SOLUTION :
As climate change increases the frequency of typhoon damage, the need for disaster safety education is growing. To address the challenge of realistically feeling a typhoon’s power, we planned a viewing-based VR experience that immerses learners in strong wind and heavy rain scenarios. In a safe environment, learners can intuitively understand the seriousness of disasters and build a sense of urgency.
Because it operates as a video-style viewing experience with no user controls, session turnover is fast and staff burden is reduced. It is easy for anyone to access, providing a consistent experience regardless of age or proficiency, which improves both operational efficiency and learning outcomes.
Typhoon Intensity VR360 Viewing Content Structure
This viewing-based VR experience lets users safely and intuitively understand typhoon hazards. Without complex interactions, participants can observe stage-by-stage changes and listen to explanations of potential damage from Intensity 1 to Intensity 5. This helps them build a step-by-step understanding of typhoon power and risk levels.
Unlike simple lectures or videos, its immersive design keeps users focused on the disaster scenario. Even with repeated sessions, the varied intensities and damages remain engaging and intuitive.
Five Typhoon Intensity Levels
Intensity 1 – Weak
Intensity 2 – Moderate
Intensity 3 – Strong
Intensity 4 – Very Strong
Intensity 5 – Super Typhoon
Specialized Technologies of Typhoon Intensity VR360 Viewing Content
Ongoing upgrades to both technology and scenarios improve the practice environment and deliver a high-quality educational experience.
1. VR Viewing Structure
Designed so users can experience disaster scenarios immersively without direct control. Even without complex interactions, they can safely follow the disaster’s progression and risks.
2. 360° Panorama and Cinematic Direction
Through VR360 video from the participant’s perspective, users feel as if they are in the middle of the disaster scene. Flying objects, storm and wind effects, and audiovisual direction create moments of tension and surprise, helping users grasp the urgency of the situation.
3. Spatial Audio
Rain, wind, and breakage sounds are delivered in a way that mimics real spaces, heightening realism. By using spatial audio, users can intuitively sense direction, distance, and intensity of sounds within VR, turning simple viewing into a multisensory disaster experience.
4. Device Optimization and Video Quality Assurance
To ensure FHD-class or higher quality and stable frame rates, multiple PCs were run in parallel for long-duration rendering. Post-production then refined VR360 effects, audio, and usability to maximize immersion. The content runs stably on major HMDs such as Meta Quest and can be deployed across diverse educational and experience environments.
