INTRO

Increase in natural disasters such as tsunamis ·
Risks of real-world disaster drills · Limited immersive disaster experiences

Recently, damage from earthquakes and tsunamis has continued to occur worldwide. We, too, must prepare for disaster situations that could strike at any time, but there are clear limits to training by experiencing actual situations.

In particular, tsunami evacuation experiences have been rare so far, making it more important than ever to establish more immersive and effective learning methods.

SOLUTION :

Although natural disasters like tsunamis are increasing worldwide, real-world disaster drills are dangerous and opportunities to experience them are limited. To address this, we developed  VR experience content that allows users to experience and learn real disaster situations safely in a virtual environment. In a sudden tsunami situation, users may initially fail, but through mid-course guidance and repeated experiences, they learn proper actions and ultimately build the experience of evacuating safely.

The Tsunami Evacuation VR content goes beyond offering a simple experience; it aims to develop the user’s ability to evacuate safely even in real situations through realistic learning and staged behavioral training.

1. Immersive Disaster Experience
Provide vivid experiences by combining realistic virtual environments with disaster simulations
2. Participatory Learning Experience
Maximize presence through diverse sensory stimuli and real interactions
3. Acquire Standard Safety Knowledge
Acquire practical emergency response knowledge to strengthen community safety capacity

IMXR® Safety Experience VR Content - Tsunami Evacuation Experience: Structure

1. Start

TutorialTsunami Occurs
For participants unfamiliar with VR HMD operation,
we provide guidance on how to use the controllers.
Beginning with an explanation of tsunamis,
a summer vacation beach–themed
evacuation scenario unfolds.

2. Tsunami Evacuation Without Preparation

At the beach, the participant feels the ground shaking and sees the sea receding. After checking the tsunami emergency text, they hurriedly leave the beach, but amid confusion and without any guidance, they follow others running into an alley. Eventually, seawater surges in and the alley is quickly flooded. Through realistic scene direction, participants feel the confusion and urgency of the disaster and clearly recognize the dangers caused by incorrect evacuation behavior. This naturally encourages recognition of the need for proper evacuation procedures.

Tsunami occurs
Check the tsunami alert text
Evacuate from the beach
Move into the alley following others
Evacuate toward a target with your back to the wave
Swept away by incoming seawater

3. Learning Safe Evacuation Methods

: Following the previous scene where they failed to escape and were submerged, the causes of the accident are analyzed from multiple angles. Realistic risk factors are reflected, including individual complacency, lack of disaster knowledge, the absence of coastal signage, and even the lack of a disaster guidance system. Participants learn methods for safe evacuation as the wave approaches and gain an understanding of how not only personal actions but also institutional management affect accidents in disaster situations.

4. Practicing Correct Tsunami Evacuation

: Based on the confusion and mistakes from the previous experience, the participant now performs correct evacuation behaviors. They assess the situation when a disaster occurs, move along safe routes, and, when necessary, help others—gradually internalizing practical evacuation guidelines. Ultimately, participants acquire proper disaster-response procedures: judging the situation amid confusion, choosing safe routes, and cooperating with those around them to move quickly.

Check Tsunami Warning Signs
Correct Action 1 - Shout Evacuation Calls
Confirm warning signs and alert texts of the tsunami
to recognize the disaster situation.

Loudly inform nearby citizens that evacuation is necessary.

Correct Action 1 - Move
Correct Action 2 - Evacuate (1)
Quickly leave the beach, check evacuation signs,
and identify emergency shelters and action guidelines.

Enter the alley and, by swinging both arms holding controllers,
run along the route toward a building with three or more floors.

Correct Action 2 - Evacuate (2)
Correct Action 3 - Wait
At the end of the road, the Coast Guard appears and urges evacuation,
and the participant arrives in front of the shelter.
Evacuate to a safe space and wait until the advisory is lifted.

IMXR® Safety Experience VR Content - Tsunami Evacuation Experience: Features

1. Highly Realistic Virtual Environment

We realistically implemented actual coastlines and cityscapes to provide a sense of being directly inside a disaster situation. Beach leisure items and facilities (tubes, parasols, mats, sandcastles, etc.) and urban environment elements (lighthouse, street trees, cars, etc.) are meticulously implemented. With high-quality modeling, we created detailed environments and objects, and through optimization, we provide stable operation and immersion even in situations with many objects and effects. This allows participants to feel as if they are within a real environment, not a simple backdrop.

2. Scenario Direction that Brings the Scene to Life

During the evacuation, we apply natural animations of crowds walking, running, and falling amid confusion, and implement diverse disaster situations such as waves surging from behind and seawater rising rapidly. These dynamic presentations are not mere visual decorations; they are designed so that users experience tension and crisis as if in the real field.

3. Interaction Design that Enhances Sensory Engagement

Participants perform running motions by swinging both controllers, scoop sand to build or tap sandcastles, touch a phone, and press buttons to teleport—experiencing various intuitive interactions. The running motion offers fun through physical engagement beyond simple movement, and scenes of shouting evacuation calls together enhance both learning and immersion. This interaction design leads users to act directly in disaster situations and connects to mastering actual evacuation behaviors and safety procedures.

4. Intuitive UI/UX Design

Using various audiovisual information elements such as arrows, narration, guide UI, news footage, and emergency texts, we designed the experience so that users can understand directions and proper procedures during the disaster simulation. These elements support both learning and the acquisition of safe behaviors without disrupting the immersive experience.

5. Efficient Scenario Focused on Essentials

We included only the essential information and necessary action procedures for experiencing disaster situations, eliminating unnecessary elements to maximize learning efficiency. The experience is designed in the order of Problem → Guidance → Retry, allowing users to learn correct actions through failure and internalize them through repetition.
