First Steps to Advance Marine Education: WMU President Visits Samwoo Immersion

Recently, WMU (World Maritime University) President Maximo Mejia, Professor Moon Seong-hyeok, Professor Chae Jong-ju, and other visitors visited several organizations including the Korea Coast Guard and KOMSA to sign MOUs, and then visited Samwoo Immersion as their last stop. The main purpose of this visit was to understand Samwoo Immersion’s technology trends and check the status of the headquarters’ educational content and infrastructure construction.
After learning about the SWXR job training curriculum that runs in parallel with theory and practice at Samwoo Immersion, WMU expressed an interesting opinion that this curriculum could be applied to various educational and training systems. In particular, it was emphasized that if parts that are difficult to proceed in terms of safety and cost are learned through XR content during the practical training process, it would be an excellent teaching material. This approach will contribute to the continuous development of relationships to create a more effective educational environment in the field of marine education.
The World Maritime University, located in Malmö, Sweden, was established in July 1983 by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) of the United Nations (UN) to train professionals in the fields of maritime safety, environmental protection, and shipping. The university is operated with support from international organizations and each country, and its students are mainly civil servants and experts in the maritime field from developing countries. After graduating, they play a central role in the shipping and shipbuilding industries of each country or in related international organizations.
Through our collaboration with WMU, we will continue to strive to improve the quality of marine education and contribute to global marine safety and environmental protection. These efforts will lead to the advancement of marine education and play a significant role in training future marine experts.
