The Korea Coast Guard Education Institute, together with Samwoo Immersion, presents a new standard in maritime safety education
Samwoo Immersion, a leading company in XR (Extended Reality) technology in Korea, unveiled its VR safety training education case with the Korea Coast Guard Education Institute, sharing achievements under the theme of “Hearing XR Education Innovation Through Customer Voices.” Since 2018, the two organizations have been creating a new paradigm in maritime safety education, drawing attention especially for the tsunami evacuation VR experience content and the nation’s first tidal flat safety VR experience center.
“Experience Remembered by the Body, Not the Head” – Real Reactions from the Field
Kim Sungwan, Head of the Department of Public Administration and Safety at the Korea Coast Guard Education Institute, said, “Through the VR Station XO equipment, shaking, sounds, and the pressure of an emergency situation are reproduced just like reality,” and evaluated, “Trainees respond by saying ‘Wow, it feels real,’ proving its high sense of realism.”
He also emphasized, “Unlike conventional theory-based education, XR education allows learners to collide with situations directly in realistic environments, making the educational effect significantly different. The biggest distinction is that repeated training in lifelike conditions enables the body to react first in emergencies.”
The Tidal Flat Safety VR Experience Center project, conducted from December 2023 to August 2024, was the nation’s first attempt to prevent the increasing number of tidal flat accidents each year.
Realistic tidal flat environments and marine life → Highly immersive learning
Unreal Engine-based tidal simulation → Experience rising seawater as if real
Use of Voxel World and deformable sand → Reproduces the softness and texture of mud
The center is designed to allow learning from accident cause analysis to prevention measures, contributing to raising national safety awareness and spreading a safe tidal flat experience culture.
