PROJECT GOAL

In collaboration with the Korea Port Training Institute (KPTI) Busan Training Center, we developed immersive VR training content to strengthen port safety education. The project was designed to prevent asphyxiation accidents that may occur in confined spaces within ports, and was developed as VR content that reflects the actual working environment and safety procedures at Ulsan Port.

This immersive training content is structured to allow learners to systematically experience the entire process—from wearing safety equipment prior to entering a confined space, to the occurrence of an asphyxiation accident, root-cause analysis, learning rescue procedures, and hands-on rescue practice. By supplementing the limitations of theory-centered training, it enhances field-oriented safety response capabilities. Through this, it contributes to improving safety awareness among port workers and preventing serious industrial accidents, presenting a new standard for practical safety training amid the evolving port industry environment.

“I actually visited the port, and it’s depicted exactly the same, so it doesn’t feel unfamiliar at all. Also, people’s movements are very natural and the image quality is excellent. Confined spaces are especially difficult to enter in real life, but being able to experience and train like this for educational purposes seems to have enriched the training curriculum at the Port Training Institute.”

It was a great help to experience safety procedures and response methods in advance before entering the actual site. Rather than simply watching an asphyxiation accident scenario, I could perform procedures through direct interaction—such as putting on safety equipment, measuring oxygen levels, rescuing a victim, and filling the stretcher—so it stays in my memory for a long time and seems likely to increase my confidence when applying it in real work. In particular, I was very satisfied that it includes accident cause analysis and rescue scenarios, so it goes beyond a simple experience to improve both problem-solving skills and safety judgment.


Construction of the Experience Center 

Construction of a Port Training Institute VR Safety Experience Center

At Samwoo Immersion, we built the Korea Port Training Institute VR Safety Experience Center so that domestic port workers and trainees can directly experience port safety management and the risks of confined-space work in virtual reality, enhancing their understanding. The VR Safety Experience Center consists of five hands-on experience rooms and one viewing-based training room. The overall training system of the port safety experience center effectively supports practice-oriented safety training.

The experience center is composed of a total of five experience rooms. Each room provides interactive VR content that enables learners to study and experience various safety trainings. In the control room, instructors can monitor the content screen and trainees in real time, track learning progress, and provide tailored feedback and safety guidance.

In addition, a separate training room can accommodate up to 30 people for viewing-based content, enabling learners to systematically study various accident cases and safety rules. This helps both instructors and trainees intuitively understand hazards within ports and vividly improve safety response capabilities.

Seven Port Safety VR Contents

VR training content that strengthens port workers’ safety awareness and practical response skills through immersive experiences in a virtual environment!

With recent advances in VR technology—such as precise interaction, realistic interfaces, and real-time feedback systems—complex port operations and safety procedures can be realistically implemented in virtual space. Immersive VR experiences provide environments similar to actual worksites while enabling repetitive training, helping improve understanding of hazardous situations and response capabilities. In addition, it eliminates risks that may arise in multi-person training spaces, such as confined-space accidents and safety incidents, ensuring learner safety. An enhanced training system and immersive learning environment also offer significant advantages in terms of accessibility and efficiency.

IMXR VR content for preventing confined-space asphyxiation accidents in ports was developed to enable learners to safely experience and learn in confined-space situations similar to actual port worksites through a virtual reality (VR) environment. Learners can step through the process in various confined-space scenarios—such as holds, tanks, and manholes—including pre-entry risk assessment, air monitoring, ventilation measures, and wearing protective equipment. This maximizes the effectiveness of practice-oriented safety training to enhance port workers’ safety awareness and prevent asphyxiation accidents.

VR Content Structure for Confined-Space Asphyxiation Accident Prevention Training

This VR content begins with the learner taking the role of a port worker and correctly putting on the mandatory safety equipment required before confined-space work. Next, the learner enters a poorly ventilated confined space and virtually experiences an asphyxiation accident scenario, allowing them to intuitively recognize the risks of oxygen deficiency and exposure to hazardous gases through the accident progression. After the accident experience, a learning stage follows in which the learner analyzes the cause of the accident based on site information and situational clues, identifying procedural non-compliance and risk factors. Next, the learner studies cautions during rescue and step-by-step rescue methods, then performs rescue activities firsthand while excluding reckless entry and complying with safety rules such as wearing protective equipment, measuring air, and securing ventilation. Through this series of processes, learners can comprehensively improve hazard awareness, judgment, and safe rescue capabilities required for preventing and responding to asphyxiation accidents.
