[EPIC GAMES - UNREAL ENGINE] Samwoo Immersion Establishes Efficient Port Logistics Management System with Digital Twin

Samwoo Immersion established an efficient port logistics management system with digital twin

Project Investigation - Unreal Engine (Jinyoung Choi | May 17, 2022)

Busan Port is Korea's largest trading port, and the monitoring system of Busan Port, the center of shipping and logistics, was operated inefficiently as the systems for operation, safety, and prediction were separated from each other. Accordingly, Busan Port needed an integrated control system to increase port operation efficiency, and Samwoo, a company specializing in XR solutions in industry We have collaborated with Samwoo Immersion Co., Ltd. As a result, a digital twin-based VARLOS Terminal Monitoring System using Unreal Engine was built.

The existing control system provides limited quantity and work information, and the best way to check the work situation in real time is to install CCTV. In addition, as legislation on the safety of field workers was recently enacted, a system capable of monitoring integrated information in real time was more demanded.

VARLOS, created with this request, is a 3D-based digital control system that visualizes large-capacity data and continuous data collection from the port terminal. It is reflected as it is, and the loading/unloading of containers, equipment, loading and unloading operation status, and safety status of the port are visualized in real time in 3D and can be intuitively monitored. Through this, the port workers and on-site technicians will be able to communicate more densely, and in the event of an accident, they will be able to identify and respond to the situation more quickly through notification that conveys the situation at the accident site in detail. In addition, the collected data enables more efficient port operation, such as increasing the productivity of cranes and reducing unnecessary input of transport vehicles through AI-based analysis and predictive simulation.

There are various reasons why Samwoo Immersion chose Unreal Engine to build this advanced system. Among them, Unreal Engine supports the integration of WGS84 coordinate system and MQTT data the most. In order to build a perfect digital twin, topographic mapping using a satellite map-based tiling technique and interworking of Geo-IoT information are essential. provided.

For data integration, the fact that Unreal Engine provides all of the full source code has been a huge help. The IoT interface requires a low-power and lightweight protocol due to the characteristics of the wireless terminal, and the MQTT (Message Queuing Telemetry Transport) messaging protocol, which satisfies this requirement, is an ISO standard method widely used for low-power broadband communication networks for real-time data transmission. This is the communication method of IoT sensor devices used in ports. Therefore, it was essential to integrate real-time MQTT data. Thanks to Unreal Engine providing full source code, the data were integrated by modifying the necessary source code without restrictions, and through this, we were able to have all the essential project functions required by the client. In addition, as it is a standard IoT platform based on LTE and 5G communication networks, it has the scalability to work with any IoT device.

There are many more reasons why Samwoo Immersion chose Unreal Engine. Photorealistic 3D data with high-resolution textures can be applied immediately in the field and the results can be checked in real time without compromising performance, and the entire process can be created and reviewed faster and more intuitively using Blueprint Visual Scripting prior to coding, making it easier to iterate. time could be reduced. We also dramatically reduced development time with several plugins and assets available in Unreal Engine's marketplace.
