Project name : Yeosu Korea Coast Guard Academy, Mudflat safety accident VR Content

Project period : December 26, 2023 ~ August 31, 2024

Introducing and operating the nation’s first mudflat safety education VR virtual experience system! Contribute to raising public maritime safety awareness and improving crisis response capabilities!

Marine Safety Experience Center Mudflat Safety VR Experience

This project, conducted in conjunction with the Yeosu Coast Guard Training Center, established a marine safety experience center that introduced the nation's first mudflat safety education VR virtual experience system to prevent mudflat accidents, which are increasing every year.

Various marine safety programs, including tidal flat safety VR experience education, will be held within the experience center, and we hope to contribute to raising public marine safety awareness and improving crisis response capabilities.

Features of Mudflat Safety VR Experience Education

1. Safety experience training that stimulates the five senses

For audio-visual stimulation, we referenced the mudflats at Hanagae Beach, where the actual mudflat accident occurred, and implemented the mudflats and tidal valley topography, surrounding environment, fog, and tide speed based on real-time footage. Mudflat creatures such as seagulls, crabs, and octopuses are also created to look identical to real life, creating interest during the Haerujil experience.

In addition, appropriate sound effects according to the scene are added to create the feeling of being in an actual mud flat. In the introduction, accident occurrence, and disaster prevention measures, BGM is inserted to aurally stimulate urgent situations to increase immersion in the content.

< Realization of isolated appearance of tidal valley >

< Implementing the escape from the gully >

< Implementation of tidal flat terrain and handprints on tidal flats >

2. High tide simulation, physical implementation based on Unreal Engine

< Implementing the speed at which the tide rises >

The speed of the rising tide was implemented using Unreal Engine’s Water System and timeline functions. The water height was set to rise gradually through the timeline, and physics-based simulations were applied to express natural water movement. In addition, post-processing was used to enhance the reflection and refraction effects of the water, and visual changes were added as environmental elements were submerged in water to increase the sense of immersion.

3. Implementation of flexibility of Mudflat mud using Voxel World

< To give a realistic feel, we used a Voxel world to implement the flexibility of mud when digging in the mudflats. >

In order to realistically express the process of digging the Mudflat, Voxel World was applied. The Voxel-based world processes the 3D space into small block units, so that it can precisely simulate the shape deformation that occurs when digging the mud.

Through this, the flexibility and deformation of the mud are reflected in real time, and the mud is naturally deformed according to the depth and angle of digging. This method contributes to maximizing the feeling of physical interaction when users directly dig into the mudflats.

4. Implementation of the tactile sensation of tidal flats using plastic deformation sand

< Realizing the feel of a tidal flat using plastically deformed sand >

In order to reproduce the texture of the tidal flat similar to reality, plastic deformation sand was installed in the experience room. Plastic deformation sand has the characteristic of being deformed by external force, but returning to its original state after a certain period of time, so it is suitable for expressing the soft resistance of mud felt when stepping on or digging the Mudflat.

When simulating this in a VR environment, it was implemented so that the shape of the Mudflat naturally deforms according to the user's interaction, combining it with a voxel-based physics system, and providing a tactile experience similar to reality.

Expected effects

The mudflat safety experience education promotes marine safety awareness and contributes to the spread of a safe mudflat experience culture. It is expected to provide a higher level of immersion through visual, auditory, and tactile senses to all people of all ages who wish to experience mudflats, as well as related workers, thereby improving the ability to prevent mudflat accidents and respond to crises.
